Reading Beyond the Text and Taking Stock of Its Context

Reading Beyond Text Questions

Questions to Consider:

Sociopolitical

  • What cultural statements (in literary and non-literary texts) is this book responding to?
  • In what ways do the representations of families, place, and/or diversity reflect worldviews circulating about families, place, and/or diversity in society?
  • What are the explicit and implicit assumptions about class, race, and gender embedded in these worldviews?

Historical

  • What is the historical context of the characters’ social circumstances? In what ways have historical events contributed to the storyline?

What possibilities exist for addressing or challenging limited perspectives represented in this book?
