Looking more deeply at the text itself also helps illuminate the meanings it might convey. We also recommend reading children’s books alongside everyday texts such as video clips, newspaper stories, advertisements, toys, music, etc. When children are reading outside their own experience, pairing the book with more familiar texts helps them discern how the cultural themes are similar and different from their lived experiences (Short, 2011).
