Margarita Engle grew up is a Cuban-American botanist, agronomist, poet, and novelist of many young adult verse novels about Cuba. She won the first Newbery Honor ever awarded to a Latino author for her book, The Surrender Tree, and she has won many other awards for her books. She lives in Central California with her husband.
