These are Puerto Rican parrots. They lived on this island for millions of years, and then they nearly vanished from the earth forever.

Puerto Rican parrots, once abundant, came perilously close to extinction in the 1960s due to centuries of foreign exploration and occupation, development, and habitat destruction. In this compelling book, Roth and Trumbore recount the efforts of the scientists of the Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery Program to save the parrots and ensure their future. Woven into the parrots’ story is a brief history of Puerto Rico itself, from before the first human settlers to the present day.

With striking collage illustrations, a unique format, and engaging storytelling, Parrots Over Puerto Rico invites readers to witness the amazing recovery efforts that have enabled Puerto Rican parrots to fly over their island once again.

Source: https://www.leeandlow.com/books/2835

Publisher:

Lee & Low Books

ISBN#:

9781620140048

Author:

Susan L. Mistral loved words and sounds and stories. Born in Chile, she would grow to become the first Nobel Prize-winning Latina woman in the world. As a poet and a teacher, she inspired children across many countries to let their voices be heard. This beautifully crafted story, where words literally come to life, is told with the rhythm and melody of a poem. The second in Luna Rising's bilingual storybook biography series. My Name is Gabriela/Me llamo Gabriela is beautiful tribute to a woman who taught us the power of words and the importance of following our dreams. The story of Gabriela Mistral will continue to inspire children everywhere.
Source: <a Through the cycle of the seasons, what is important has remained: being with family, knowing when berries are ripe for picking, listening to stories in a warm home.

Told by Traditional Sister and Contemporary Sister, each from her own time, this is a book about tradition and about change. art produced by the women of her tribe. With never-before-seen photographs of the very private Ndebele women and their paintings, this unique book shows the passing of traditions from parent to child and introduces young readers to a new culture through a new friend.

Good Reads. class="field-item even" property="content:encoded">
The book takes place in the library in Alexandria, Egypt. The library is a symbol of Egypt, as a leader in the acquisition of knowledge for millennia, and as a symbol of freedom of thought. It was built on the site of an ancient library that held much of the wisdom of the world 1500 years ago and earlier.

The narrator is a library worker who joins the protests of January 2011. She describes how a multitude of angry protestors approached the library. Dr. Ismail Serageldin, the library’s director, steps outside the library to remind the protestors of the library’s frailty and of its treasures. One by one, young people join him in creating a human chain around the building to protect it from some of the angry protestors. They unfurl a giant Egyptian flag on its steps and their joy is contagious.

Background material at the end of the book includes information about the artwork and graphic motifs in the book, the history of the library, protest-sign translations and photographs of the recent events in Egypt.

Hands Around the Library has been translated into Arabic and published in Arabic by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (The Alexandria Library), Alexandria, Egypt.

Publisher:

Dial Books, 2012

ISBN#:

9780803737471

Author:

Susan L.
